How does an industry exist, let alone survive, at such preposterously claimed loss ratios?Ī film is a flop because of its budget.

In the movie business, one keeps hearing about 90 per cent of films flopping in a year. But I released them myself (with PVR as partner and distributor), because I believed in them, and I knew if we took the risks ourselves, we wouldn’t pass on losses to anyone. I could have sold these films to somebody. One was a film on childcare and education the other had an entirely new star-cast. But let's also acknowledge the fact that even at box office the movie did wonders. So Taare Zameen Par was a great film, one of the best of Aamir's filmography. This was before Ghajini boom, which brought back Aamir in race of stardom and made people compare him with the number one of that time, SRK. It grossed more than another mindless comedy Partner, which was fifth highest grosser of the year. Welcome won the clash grossing 70 Crores becoming second highest grosser of the year, but Taare Zameen Par wasn't far behind. Not to forget that the movie starred Akshay who was also going strong with back-to-back big Hits. It clashed with a film like Welcome which was a mindless comedy, a genre much more preferred by the audience compared to social drama. The movie was on the shoulders of a child actor, Aamir had a major role only in the second half of the film. It was kind of a slow paced drama with not much humor, no singing or dancing, no romance, like the above films mentioned.

The movie didn't have the same entertainment value like Lagaan, Rang De Basanti or Dil Chahta Hai.

Adjusted for inflation, it would've grossed around 150 Crores in today's time. Taare Zameen Par was the fourth highest grossing film of 2007 with total collections of 61 Crores.
